Lubbers, Lubbers and More Lubbers

Since my first post I have heard from another Lubbers that there were two groups of Lubbers.  My Lubbers came from Bentheim and the other from the Netherlands.  Since my group had so many children there are tons scattered all over West Michigan and other locals.  The dutch Lubbers seem to be centered around Zeeland area and I don't know how many or what the descendant count is looking like.  And since the first house post, I had my disaster so I'm spending lots of time trying to get everything back into the file.  But going along with my paperless status, I'm shredding paper files that are not original and I have digitally copies of.

One of my first ventures into the trenches of Genealogy in 1997 (about) was meeting with my mother's cousin who had done TONS and TONS of work on our shared line.  She very generously shared by copying all her files that included newspaper clippings and handwritten memories.  So I started as a name collector with that huge file of handwritten family group sheets.  But what I did NOT do was sourcing.  I had no idea where that name or date originated.  I negated the work done by others by not giving credit to the original.

As I go back through those pages plus other collections, I'm looking at a lifetime of work by many as well as record of who came before me.  I'm not a name collector.  Rather I'm honoring the work of my relatives.  The years and years of their efforts (typing, organizing, going to libraries) are worth the hours of effort by me.  Their love of family and history deserves preservation.  What I'm hoping to pass down to my descendants is a well organized record of my work, including names and faces and stories of those who came before,

Wedding Wednesday: Gradus Lubbers and Dina Sneller Ball

Gradus Lubbers and Dina Sneller Bol where married March 14, 1896 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  Three children total born to this couple, one set of twins.

It's curious how little anyone in the family knows about the courtship and marriage of our ancestors.  So write down your own story to save it for the future generations!

Wedding Wednesday: Naber & Lubbers

Walter Naber and Priscilla Lubbers married February 14, 1918 in Fillmore Township, Michigan. Together they had 11 children, 2 who died young.  Walter Naber is credited by family with saving some of his younger children who were very small.  He setup a little incubator at home for the newborns, keeping them warm like little chicks!  Their youngest daughter was actually born at the hospital at a time when very few babies were not born at home because of the high risk birth.

Tombstone Tuesday: Great-Great-Great Grandparents #27

Hendrik and Zwaantje (Schrotenboer) Lubbers were married October 9, 1865 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  Together they had 15 children.  Hendrik was born January 30, 1838 in Bentheim and died February 4, 1865 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  Zwaantje was born October 10, 1847 in Fillmore Township, Michigan and died February 17, 1904 in Fillmore Township.  Together they are buried in the Graafscap Cemetery.

Tombstone Tuesday: Great-Great-Grandparents #14

Gradus and Dena (Sneller Bol) Lubbers were married March 14, 1896 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  Gradus was born December 1, 1872 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  Dena Sneller was born December 26, 1875 in Olive Township, Michigan.  (Dena was adopted by the Bol family after the death of her mother.)  They had three children together.  Gradus died January 20, 1947 in Holland, Michigan at the age of 74.  Dena remarried to Jacob Haveman and died November 8, 1960 in Holland, Michigan at the age of 84.  They are buried in the East Holland Cemetery, Michigan.

Walter and Priscilla Naber are buried in the East Holland Cemetery, Michigan.  Walter Naber was born August 22, 1895 in Holland Township, Michigan.  Priscilla Lubbers was born November 28, 1896 in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  They were married February 14, 1918 at the bride's parents home in Fillmore Township, Michigan.  They had 9 children together (three still living).  Priscilla died May 20, 1963 in Holland, Michigan. Walter remarried to Cornelia Beyer in 1965.  He died March 24, 1975 in Holland Township, Michigan.

1940 census

As you know the 1940 census was released at the beginning of April. I was very excited and I thought that was the first year that I would find my grandparents together.  But no, they were not married until 1941.  So 10 more years and 4 kids later, they will finally be listed together!  But I have been able to find a number of other folks.  Of course I have to page through each district but it does go pretty fast!

I found almost all of my great grandparents.  I did know where they would be located since they didn't move around much.  My other set of grandparents I haven't attempted yet since I only know they lived in Holland.  I also found a few the the great-great grandparents.  A couple as I was looking for other names and some because I looked through all three of the districts in Zeeland!

The census above is of my great-grand father Benjamin Groenhof.  My father remembers him so I went looking since I knew he had been living in Zeeland in 1940.  I found him living with his second born son.
